What’s GOOP? It stands for what so many of us need and that’s the Good Opinion Of Others. And it’s as slippery and gooey as it sounds. Doing things in order to get the good opinion of others can rule your life. And make it miserable.
The truth is, we live in a very conforming culture, so it’s easy to make other people’s opinions matter more than our own. And since we often don’t know what to do to step out of the pattern, it’s hard to stop.
But the truth is that other people’s opinions become important when our own opinion of ourselves is dormant or weak. If we strengthen that self opinion, however, it all changes. And you can do that by continually supporting yourself. When you are super supported, you’ll find the opinion of others won’t matter as much.
Sound too simple? Okay, here’s a challenge for you. For the next five days, say ten positive, “Yay Me” type things all day long, for anything and everything… doing a good job, thinking ahead, being kind, handling a situation well. Complement yourself for even small things and don’t hold back.
Doing that will create a strong emotional immune system that will make you impervious to outside opinions. And perhaps even allow you to enjoy them. Like a friend of mine who says, “Well, if people are going to talk about me and judge me, I might as well give them something interesting to work with!”
