Changing Ourselves!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Okay, you’ve identified something you need & want to change in yourself and so you just do it, right?

We wish! Most often, despite all our attempts, we fall back again and again into old behaviours. That’s because these behaviours have been passed down to us and are installed in our energetic systems. It’s not easy to eradicate them.

Why Changing Ourselves is So Challenging!

Which group of people is more likely to abuse their children–those that have been abused or those that haven’t? The answer is: those who were abused. You’d think that people who’d experienced the terrors of child abuse would be the least likely to repeat this behaviour. Not true. Why? New brain research supports this with explanations of how ‘tracks’ get laid down in our bodies and brains. These ‘tracks’ can be as deep as troughs & be very difficult to get out of.  They act as a kind of trance that we can’t wake up from.

Unskilful Ways for Changing Ourselves:

Sometimes people will use shame or chastisement to blast themselves out, but not only does this feel terrible, even if it does bring some change, the pattern usually comes back full force.

So, what does work? Repetition of the new behaviour. Repetition will lay down new tracks, making it easier and easier to do. The lovely poem below by Portia Nelson says it all so well. I love this poem because it creates compassion for ourselves as we go through the steps that changing ourselves involves. If we recognize that changing ourselves is often slow & incremental, then it will be easier for us to be patient and give the process the time it needs. That will help us to hold to the new behaviour rather than chucking it out of frustration.

A Resource for Changing Ourselves!

But before the poem, I want to tell you about something. A colleague of mine, Rachel Assuncao, has developed a 14 day e-course that’s designed to help you make simple and manageable changes to improve your health.  I’ve just done it myself and loved it. Although some of the material was familiar, the repetition was good and some of the material was new to me. I really liked that.

The course, called 14 Days to a Healthier New You, offers a daily practical tip or recipe to help you improve your health and wellbeing. The course is free and I highly recommend it.

Give it a shot. I think you’ll like it. Now, here’s the poem.

By Portia Nelson

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN 5 SHORT CHAPTERS:

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in
I am lost . . . I am helpless
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III

I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in . . . it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V

I walk down another street.

Busyness!

Busyness

The Badge of Busyness

Below is a poem about Busyness by coach, Christine Arylo. Although the poem is for women, both genders fall under the whip of the task-master’s ‘To Do’ list. and fall prey to getting busy!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to get things done, but never at the expense of keeping good, positive energy. In my experience, it’s vital to keep the balance between ‘doing’ and ‘being’. Clients/customers don’t hire us just to do things, they hire us because they like us, which is just another way of saying they like our energy!! Think about it, when was the last time you bought something from someone you didn’t like?

That’s why at the top of my page in the morning, ABOVE my ‘To Do’ list is my ‘To Be’ list. Yes, I want to get things done, but always in a way that honours my beingness. I try at all costs to avoid busyness. Busyness presumes preoccupation and make me less available to others. And to life itself.

‘Beingness’ versus ‘Busyness’:

One of the ways I keep my energy high is to cultivate feeling ‘spacious’. When I do, I notice that I start giving myself more time, and more room, which means that I have the room to experience life more fully.

The people I work with also feel the luxury of this sense of ‘room’.Both of us often step out of our heads and out of the contraction that busyness likes to create and into the present moment, which is the only place one can experience life. And then, strangely enough, we both take a big breath and we move forward more easily.

Here’s the poem. Enjoy!

We Burn Our Badges of Busyness:

By Christine Arylo

What are we teaching our girls?

You can be anything.
You can do anything.
You can have anything.

Now get going.

There is much to do.
So much that you will never feel like you’ve done it all.

Allow me to introduce you to your new lifetime companion
Her name is “To-Do List”

She will follow you everywhere from now on
She will be there to greet you when you wake
She will hang out near you all day long
And she will be there when you lay your head down to rest
Making sure that you don’t forget her, even as you try to sleep

You will learn to wear her as a badge of honor
This flashing symbol of busy-ness
She thrives on attention,
lives for compliments,
She seeks out acknowledgments of her busyness,
and ability to ‘get it all done’
without a sweat, and with a smile

She is not stingy
She loves to share accolades with her sister super women
Swooning and commenting on their multi-tasking feats
As if their doingness was the latest, most fabulous, all-the-rage hat

Some days you will be tired
And will want to set down the to dos
Take a break from your badge,
Whose weight you notice has become quiet heavy

You will try to unpin it
Pull it, tear it, yank it,
But no matter how hard you try
Your badge of busyness
Will not budge

Your to-do list
Doesn’t take kindly to being set down
Or Forgotten
She is fiercely intent on
Staying alive
Remaining on center stage
Where she can always be seen

What they (we) didn’t tell you
When you accepted your to-do list as a rite of passage
And fashioned on your badge with pride
Was that try as you might
When you tire
No matter how hard you try
You can’t hide
You can’t run
You can’t even pin that relentless list on some other unsuspecting soul

But YOU can choose

Girl, woman, sister
You have a choice to NEVER pick up
This badge of busyness
You have the choice to walk away and NEVER look back
Not because you stop doing and achieving
Which I know is one of your (my) greatest, unspoken fears
But because you know that you don’t need a
Badge of busyness or a never-ending list of to-dos
To prove your worth

Stand tall
Turn on your heel now
Do not follow us
A generation of women who unknowningly ran down the aisle
To marry busy-ness
And ended up with a sense of self
Tied to ‘what I’ve accomplished and gotten done in a day”

Turn away
Run away
And change your sense of self
for the good
of us all

As you turn away
We will burn our badges
And together we will change
The decree of women forever

“Yes I can do anything.”
“Yes I can be anything.”
“Yes I can have anything.”

BUT NO … I DON’T NEED TO DO BE AND HAVE EVERYTHING

I am valuable simply because I am
Even if I never pick up another to do
Even when I am doing nothing
Especially when I am just being
I am worthy

Because I know the truth

I am enough
Simply because I am

And so are you.

Mother.
Sister.
Daughter.
Woman.

Your BEST SELF!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Once a week, I talk with my co-coach in England and today, as often, we asked each other, “What can you do to actualize YOUR BEST SELF?”

Catalyzing Your BEST SELF!

We knew it’s not through getting busier! In fact, we both felt that what we wanted was to be more aligned with our sense of being. For me, I want to be less harried and more spacious in my energy field.

As I talked about this, I imagined that if I committed 10 minutes first thing in the morning and last thing at night to modulating my energy and setting my course for the day, I could ramp up the actualization potential of this goal. In that 10 minutes, I’ll do a specific visualization and use EFT at the same time to ‘install’ the images and feelings more deeply.

How To Consistently be Your BEST SELF!

The thing is, I do these techniques some days, but not consistently. But I know they’re powerful and want to do them more, so for the next 21 days, I’m going to be applying these practices to specific outcomes I want to create in my energy field. My co-coach is going to support me and I’m going to support her by email to make sure we stick to our intention!

Would you like to take some new actions to attain more of YOUR Best Self?

Your BEST SELF 21 Day Experiment!

If so, pick something you’d like to do for 21 days. Make it small and attainable, like: “For the next 21 days, I’m going to leave bread out of my diet”, or “not talk about how much I dislike my job”, or “appreciate myself” or “meditate for ten minutes every day” or “do some stretching”. Whatever it is that you know will contribute to actualizing YOUR BEST SELF!

Ask someone if you can be accountable to them. (It’s amazing how much success skyrockets the moment you add in the accountability piece.) Ask your spouse, partner, friend, coach if you can simply report to them. Tell them you don’t need any comments other than “Well done!” if you report success and NO comment if you don’t report success.

So often when we think about trying to change, we think too long term and get intimidated or exhausted at the thought. But this is only for 21 days! Why not? Your BEST SELF will be glad you did!

Your Many Talents!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

My guess is that you’ve got several talents. Right? One or two might be latent or underdeveloped, but nonetheless, one might be sitting like a seed in the dark fecund soil of your soul, waiting for you to water it.

I think for us to be fully happy we need to develop all our talents.

New Book!

For me, although most of you know me as a coach, I’m also a writer. In the last few weeks, I’ve been engrossed in doing the final edits for a young adult fiction book that’s being published by Dundurn Press this November. (My fifth book!)

What an incredible amount of work it’s been! (That’s why I’ve been remiss at writing newsletters, but more will come now.)

Meanwhile, here’s a delightful video that speaks to the beauty of complexity and commitment! Enjoy!

PS:  If YOU want to talk about how to develop a passion/talent you have sitting inside you, give me a call & we’ll chat about it.

ENERGY!

Changing Your Energy!

Being able to change your energy at will is a HUGE skill. It changes everything because it frees you from being dependent on circumstances outside yourself for how you feel!

Last week I talked about a course I’ve developed that will help you do that. In case you missed it, the course, ‘Change Your Energy, Change Your Life’, is a 40-day online course that delivers a short ‘lesson’ to your Inbox daily, bringing you videos, audios, inspirations, bits of humour, EFT tapping procedures and always a specific skill to augment your ability to modulate your energy at will.

Try The ‘Change Your Energy, Change Your Life!’ course

To try out the course for 10 days at no cost (and no obligation), click HERE! This is the last week I’ll be talking about it! Honest!

Here are some of the comments people who are taking the course are saying:

“The course reminds me that being happy is something that’s determined by me and not events. Now if I notice a mood change, I notice it earlier and stop and return to equilibrium. I love the stories and the videos too.” Evelyn Wolff, MD Wellness Educator and Artist.

Judy, another participant says, “The course is helping me stop my usual business and take a few minutes to breath and reset my perspective.”

Last Week for ‘Change Your Energy, Change Your Life course!

This is the last week I’ll be talking about the course so if you haven’t taken advantage of this offer and want to, go HERE

ENERGY!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Energy is EVERYTHING!

Energy is what we build our lives with.  It’s what attracts people and situations to us. When our energy is zinging with positivity and aliveness, we feel as if we can do anything. And we probably can.

When we feel ‘down’ (negative) and low in energy, even the smallest tasks feel like too much. Furthermore,  because the world tends to mirror us, negative energy has a way of pulling in other negative energy, taking us down further into the mire.

Taking Charge of Your Energy!

Taking charge of our energy is probably THE most vital thing you can do for your self-creation. Unfortunately, most of the time, we feel like pinball machines, reacting to what happens around us with our energy responding accordingly. But there are new techniques and understanding of brain function now that can show you HOW to modulate your energy AT WILL!

I’ve described these tools and techniques in a new course I’ve just created called, ‘Change Your Energy, Change Your Life’. It’s a 40-day online course that includes a daily bit of coaching or ‘lesson’ (5-10 minutes long) and an audio or video with a specific technique to help you change your energy right away. Some of the lessons are pithy, some funny, all are inspiring. They represent the BEST of all I’ve learned in my 30 years of coaching!

Change Your Energy, Change Your Life!

I’m gifting the first week for F*R*E*E so you try it and see if it’s for you. If you don’t opt-in at the end of the fist week, nothing more will come to you. If you do opt-in the price is $29 for the full 40 day course.

Check it out HERE. Learn to create the energy YOU want. I’ll show you how.
