Don’t hope, Decide!

Here is a great story about a life-changing experience Michael Hargrove (www.bluinc.com) had at an airport. I know you’ll like it because it’s about the power of “deciding” or choosing to have a certain kind of energy. . . . I know that’s a topic close to your heart, so here’s the story.

“While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport, I was straining to locate my friend when I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped next to me to greet his family.

First, he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, and movingly loving hug. The mans said, “It’s so good to see you, son. I missed you. His son smiled somewhat shyly, diverted his eyes, and replied softly, “Me too, Dad!”

Then the man gazed into the eyes of his oldest son (maybe 9 or 10) and said, “You’re already quite the young man. I love you very much Zach!” They hugged.

While this was happening, a baby girl squirmed excitedly in her mother’s arms. The man gently took the child from her mother”and kissed her face all over and then held her close. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder in motionless contentment.

After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, “I’ve saved the best for last!” He then gave his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed, “I love you so much!”

They stared into each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I were invading something sacred, but blurted, “Wow! How long have you two been married?”

“Fourteen years total,” he replied without breaking his gaze from his wife. “Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. Still beaming at his wife, he said, “Two whole days!”

Two days?! I was stunned! I was certain by the intensity of the greeting I just witnessed that he’d been gone for at least several weeks, if not months, and I know my expression betrayed me. So I said almost offhandedly, hoping to end my intrusion and get back to searching for my friend), “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!”

The man stopped smiling, looked me straight in the eye and said something that left me a different person. He said, “Don’t hope, friend…decide.” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!” With that, he and his family strode away together.

I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What’cha looking at?” Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied, “My future!”

Isn’t that a great story? I wanted you to hear it because it illustrates the power of intention and demonstrates that the state of our energy is always ours to decide.

Conserving Your Personal Energy

Every day we’re barraged with what doesn’t work. With what is going wrong. Or threatening to go wrong.

Once upon a cave, noticing “the negative” was an important proclivity, but now that we’ve moved out of ‘fight or flight’ survival, we are relying on our attitudes more to create our lives. To do that, we need to constantly modulate our attitudes so we keep our energy flowing and positive.

Here is a short video by Martin Seligman, the author of many books on Optimism and happiness, that describes a great new energy modulating habit that will help you keep your energy vibrant and alive.

But just before we get to the video, I want to tell you about something that might interest you. As most of you know, I just finished the “Manage Your Energy, Master Your Life” Telesummit which was fantastic. From Clutter to Order

‘Energy’ always tells the truth. That’s why I think you can tell a LOT about someone if you visit their house. Or ride in their car. I don’t want to get judgmental about how someone tends to the space around them, but I will ask you this: Does your environment support clarity, ease of use and management? Does it make you feel GREAT to be in it?

Self Belief and Energy!

Dr Joe Rubino started out as a dentist. He was a successful dentist, monetarily, but he wasn’t happy. So what? he said to himself. That’s life. There was nothing he could do about it. He’d chosen his career and now had to live with it.

But he couldn’t live with it. He said that even if he’d known how to change his life, he had no energy to do that and the little energy he did have was negative.

That’s why self-esteem and the amount of energy we have are so related and why I wanted to have Joe in the Telesummit series.  I can’t think of ANYTHING more detrimental to a person’s ability to create their lives than a lack of self belief. It affects everything.

Nonetheless, slowly Joe began to make changes. Now he’s is a world expert in creating high self esteem and he travels all over the world with his programs. And, he loves his life. In fact, he calls it a “12 out of 10″ life and challenges others to go for their best life too.

Double Dog Dare on Self-Love!

I interviewed Christine Arylo, the ’Queen of Self-Love’ on the “Manage Your Energy, Master Your Life” TeleSummit last night. Wow–she was INSPIRING!

She said that when she started her journey, she knew nothing about self-love. But she did know she wanted to live a more self-loving life than the one she was currently leading (in the corporate world), so she made a vow. That’s how it all started. A vow. That she would love herself no matter what. From there, she figured it out.

One of the things she figured out was the way fear can warp our energy and make loving ourselves more difficult. (To listen to the call, here is the replay information It’s only available until 8 pm this Wednesday so go get it! Or, to get info about the rest of the series, go HERE!)

For most of us, nothing can make us feel smaller, more constricted and unworthy as quickly as fear. So Christine has come up with the 40 Day Fear Cleanse. It looks like a great program, one I’m going to do myself. Check it out to see if its for you. 40 Day Fear Cleanse!

Meanwhile, however, since Christine loves to make what she calls “Love dares”, she tossed one out. The dare is to make this vow: “I will love myself for the rest of my life no matter what.”

I like dares too! So I’m going to up her dare so now it’s a double dare. And since my two dogs are beside me, I’ll add them into the mix too, so now it’s a double dog dare to make that vow!!!

Energy Drains & Energy Gains!

Since I’ve been hosting the “Manage Your Energy, Master Your Life” TeleSummit, (Check it out HERE!),  I’m becoming SO aware of what energy drains and gains. Yes, some of this is an individual thing but there are some general truths and one of them is this! If you want to have lots of energy and lots of positive energy, do what you love.

When we do what we love, our actions are fired from the energy centre of our hearts, and the heart is THE most powerful of all the energy centres in the body.  That’s why when we fall in love, we feel as if we could do anything. We probably can!

The Lessons of Life

For us Canadians, Friday is ‘Canada Day’ which gives us a long weekend. (That’s worth fire works in itself!)

And Americans have Monday off so they, too,  get to enjoy an extended weekend. And with the weather, at least the weather here in central Ontario, it’s already sunny and warm. I’ll be swimming this afternoon for sure.

Procrastination!

Ever noticed how once you put something off, it’s easier to put it off again? That’s because every time we avoid doing something, we essentially go around it, and inadvertently carve the groove of going around it deeper. That’s why it’s easier to slide along the old, well-trodden pathways than it is to forge new ones–the old ‘behaviour tracks’ are already laid down.

But if we persevere and keep doing the new behaviour, this too, will become a track that’s trodden and worn and then this new behaviour will become easy too.

There’s an old saying about procrastination and it’s this: if the first thing you do in the morning is eat a live frog, then nothing worse can happen for the rest of the day.

Brian Tracy, a star in the human potential field, says that your ‘frog’ should be the most difficult item on your ‘to do’ list, the thing you’re most likely to procrastinate on–because if you eat that first, it’ll give you energy and momentum for the rest of the day.

And, it will cut the rope that connects you to something that’s dragging at your energy.

Changing Ourselves!

Okay, you’ve identified something you need & want to change in yourself and so you just do it, right?

We wish! Most often, despite all our attempts, we fall back again and again into old behaviours. That’s because these behaviours have been passed down to us and are installed in our energetic systems. It’s not easy to eradicate them.

Why Changing Ourselves is So Challenging!

Which group of people is more likely to abuse their children–those that have been abused or those that haven’t? The answer is: those who were abused. You’d think that people who’d experienced the terrors of child abuse would be the least likely to repeat this behaviour. Not true. Why? New brain research supports this with explanations of how ‘tracks’ get laid down in our bodies and brains. These ‘tracks’ can be as deep as troughs & be very difficult to get out of.  They act as a kind of trance that we can’t wake up from.

Unskilful Ways for Changing Ourselves:

Sometimes people will use shame or chastisement to blast themselves out, but not only does this feel terrible, even if it does bring some change, the pattern usually comes back full force.

So, what does work? Repetition of the new behaviour. Repetition will lay down new tracks, making it easier and easier to do. The lovely poem below by Portia Nelson says it all so well. I love this poem because it creates compassion for ourselves as we go through the steps that changing ourselves involves. If we recognize that changing ourselves is often slow & incremental, then it will be easier for us to be patient and give the process the time it needs. That will help us to hold to the new behaviour rather than chucking it out of frustration.

But before the poem, I want to tell you about something. A colleague of mine, Rachel Assuncao, has developed a 14 day e-course that’s designed to help you make simple and manageable changes to improve your health.  I’ve just done it myself and loved it. Although some of the material was familiar, the repetition was good and some of the material was new to me. I really liked that.
